Oxidation of fats and oils (rancidity) is a natural reaction that occurs when unsaturated fatty acids are exposed to free oxygen. Antioxidants could therefore be added to animal feeds to prevent oxidation. During the reaction between unsaturated fatty acids and free oxygen, a peroxy radical is formed when the triglyceride free radical reacts with an oxygen molecule. The peroxy radical then reacts with another triglyceride, forming hydroperoxides, which are very unstable and break down into a number of secondary products such as aldehydes and alcohols, which contribute to the unpleasant flavours associated with rancid fats. They may also form other polymers that are unavailable and therefore reduce the energy content of the fat and are capable of affecting the absorption of, or even destroying, fat-soluble vitamins. Currently, there are no reliable standards for measuring the level of rancidity of fats, but it is generally accepted that fats with a peroxide value...

Kolkata: Chicken is set to become cheaper in the domestic market as the price of soya meal, a key poultry feed, is expected to ease off on increased availability. Industry executives said soya meal exports plunged 75.7 per cent year-on-year in May as shipments to Iran fell sharply because of the US sanctions. This has increased supply of soya meal in the domestic market, which in turn is expected to push its prices down. Soya meal constitutes 45 per cent of the poultry feed. “Since, the soya meal availability has increased in the market, prices too will fall,” Madan Mohan Maity, secretary at West Bengal Poultry Federation, told ET. “This will bring down chicken prices by 10 per cent. We are hoping price of chicken to decline from end June.” Retail chicken prices soared nearly 30 per cent to Rs 220 per kg in May from Rs 170 in January. But Amit Saraogi, managing...

New Delhi, The poultry industry in different parts of the country has been hit hard amid rumours that the novel coronavirus can transmitted through consumption of chicken, the prices of which have fallen considerably as a result.Vijay Sardana, an agricultural economist and adviser of the Poultry Federation of India, said that poultrymen were getting just Rs 20 per bird in the market whereas the cost of production was Rs 80.He said the jobs of about two crore people employed in the poultry industry across the country have been impacted.People were avoiding consumption of meat, fish, chicken, and egg etc. Due to the fall in demand, wholesale price of chicken had dropped by as much as 70 per cent. As a result, chicken was now available at Rs 100-150 per kg in retail compared with Rs 180-200 earlier on.Union Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Giriraj Singh has admitted the...

BioMould® – Surface Treatment for SilageIntroductionEnsiling is a forage preservation method based on spontaneous lactic acid fermentation under anaerobic conditions. The epiphytic lactic acid bacteria ferment the water-soluble carbohydrates in the crops to lactic acid-, and, to a lower extent, to acetic acid. Due to the production of these acids the pH of the ensiled material decreases and spoilage microorganisms are inhibited. Once the fresh material has been stacked and covered to exclude air, the ensiling process can be divided into 4 stages: Initial aerobic phase, fermentation phase, stable phase and feed-out phase or aerobic spoilage phase. Phase a : Oxygen + Sugar                  →                                 CO2 + Heat + Water (protein degraded) Phase b : Sugar                                 →   ...

Physiology of stress in poultry  JAG MOHAN Central Avian Research Institute,Izatnagar(UP)-243 122 Email: [email protected] Advertisement:   Homeostasis mechanisms maintaining the constant internal environment in the body thereby keeps the normal physiological function of the animal / birds. A deviation from normal condition is called the stress. Generally the term “Stress” is used to describe the detrimental effects of variety of factors on the health and performance of poultry. Birds have limited body resources for growth, reproduction, response to environmental changes and defense mechanism (Rosales, 1994). Under the stress conditions, there is redistribution of body resources including energy and protein at the cost of decreased growth, reproduction and health (Beck, 1991; Brake, 1987; Gross and Siegel, 1987). Under the long term stress condition or repeated stress, birds became fatigued and weak. These conditions lead to birds starvation and infectious disease (Dohms, 1990; Freeman, 1987). Domestic birds are subjected to frequent stress factors, and therefore it is important to have an...
